It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes an international hotel brand's commitment to charitable works to help fund the resources necessary to raise that child in a loving and healthy environment.

In 1999, Swissotel Hotels & Resorts began a global campaign to raise money for SOS Children’s Villages. This private child welfare organization was founded in 1949 with a mission to create a secure, family-like environment for orphaned, abandoned and neglected children of all races, nationalities and creeds.

With the help of Swissotel Hotels & Resorts, SOS Children’s Villages may well achieve its goal of providing “a loving home for every child” with active villages in 134 countries. These charitable villages make a real difference in the lives of real children in real need of good nutrition, health care, education and a stable home environment.

Consider Lavrovo, Russia, a small town south of Moscow where residents have been hit hard by high unemployment, rising poverty and a disturbing escalation of tuberculosis cases. On top of those challenges, many still suffer from the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which left high levels of radiation throughout the region.

For more than 15 years, SOS Children’s Village Lavrovo has been feeding, clothing, teaching and nurturing neglected and orphaned children. The village, made up of 12 family homes run by SOS aunts and mothers, can accommodate 78 children at a time.

From checkers tournaments and dance concerts to marathons and holiday pies, SOS activities, events and everyday pleasures sharpen the children's skills, talents and confidence.

As children do, they grow up too quickly. In 2011, Swissotel colleagues and guests raised enough money to send nine teenagers, including a boy named Oleg, off to college and professional schools in a nearby Russian city. Oleg hopes to work in international business someday in Moscow.

Please join us in spreading the word about the life-changing work being done at SOS Children’s Villages throughout the world like the one in Lavrovo, Russia. Engaging with our social media campaign helps raise vital funds for this work. Together, we can see many more Olegs grow into thriving, independent adults.
