Pint-sized chefs-in-training worked alongside Miss Switzerland Linda Fäh to raise CHF 3'000 at a fun and inspiring fundraising lunch at Swissotel Zurich in 2010. With a little help from Swissotel chef Mr. Thorsten Gessel, the team cooked up plenty of support for SOS Children’s Villages in Africa right alongside a delicious pizza feast.

A strong desire to help rebuild a peaceful society for children like Mouna in Gulu, Uganda, was the inspiration for the fundraising event. When her mother was too sick to care for her, Mouna became homeless at a very young age. Life on the streets is a risky venture in any city, but Mouna’s life was especially threatened because her hometown was at the centre of a two-decades-long war between the Ugandan government and rebel forces, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Notorious for abducting more than 25,000 children and recruiting as many as 100,000 child soldiers, the LRA was partially subdued in a tentative truce in 2006. But the displacement of 2 million people, decades of violence and an epidemic of AIDS has crippled Gulu, making the rebuilding process slow and difficult.

Children who have lost their families to violent acts or suffered violence themselves need the stability and psychological support of a strong and loving family. SOS Children’s Villages offers that support and so much more. SOS Children’s Villages homes are safe havens where kids can be part of a loving family, attend local schools, and receive essential health care and nutritional services throughout childhood. SOS Children’s Villages also works to support parents with counseling, assistance in generating income and guidance on improving parenting skills.

Swissotel Hotels and Resorts has been a proud supporter of SOS Children’s Villages for more than 15 years. Our commitment aids efforts such as the family strengthening programmes, which benefitted 328,700 children and adults in 2013 alone.

But our work is far from finished. An estimated 1 billion children live in areas affected by conflict and as many as 300 million of them are under the age of 5. Let’s work together to build peaceful societies that honor and respect children. When you share, comment or like these posts, you can make an important difference for children like Mouna by increasing our corporate contribution.
